ABOUT ME

Brought up on the Lancashire coastal town of St Annes-on-sea and living by the open sands, I was continually surrounded by nature as I grew up.

So, no matter where I find myself, I am always attracted to nature and it inevitably shows in my art.

I enjoyed drawing and moved towards a career in art, taking a Foundation Course in Art at Blackpool Art College with distinction.

Learning more and more about art, I became aware of modernist art and made pictures which were influenced by 19th and 20th Century art movements.

Having taken a different path in education, away from art at university, I took the decision to resume my painting and drawing practice full time in 2005.

ON ART

My practice is a blend of formal and self-taught methods. The principle of drawing, is one I will not abandon in my work and goes hand in hand with painting for me.

Composition, structure and overall balance is something I work at in a picture.

Subjects tend to be land and seascapes with the occasional forays into figure work.

Art, for me, happens when I look before nature, whether it is the sea, hill, figure or still life and can make a drawing/painting that accurately reflects everything I see and feel about it.

Each picture for me is a learning process, a fresh attempt at conveying the subject through drawing and painting.

Each picture starts as representational studies, usually drawings to explore and understand the subject more and is then taken further and further through the process of painting.
