From Campion Hill is an evocative landscape watercolour painting with a beautiful array of bold, expressive marks and rhythms depicting a view out to the countryside from the south east of Royal Leamington Spa.

A soft palette of colours with delicate highlighted accents create a balance in the picture. Energetic marks range from strong brushstrokes of Indian ink mixed with rich watercolour, through to dry brush and rubbing. You are invited to see important elements of the view anew, in an attempt to bring to life fresh and true insights from the landscape.

You can see the preoccupation with defining space and shape through a personal language. What is unique in this painting is that I have placed together representational marks alongside simplified, expressive marks — noticeable in the contrast between vivid ink marks of a tree and the thin watercolour background.

The delicate earth colours in the painting are inspired by my earlier landscape watercolours of 2007 and 2008 but have a wider range, with bold highlights appearing from my recent oil landscape paintings.

It was painted using Winsor & Newton watercolour paint and Indian ink on the finest Two River's hand-made 300lb 630gsm watercolour paper.

Beautiful modern art — From Campion Hill expressive landscape watercolour painting.
