Untitled (04), Shine West explores the relationship between gesture and structure, where motion, light, and memory intersect. The surface is built through the repeated application of ink, layered, disrupted, and reasserted until the composition settles into a state of calibrated tension. This ongoing process of mark-making speaks to the interaction of opposing forces — fluidity and restraint, light and shadow, presence and absence.
The marks accumulate across the page without hierarchy, with direction, pressure, and interruption used as compositional tools.
The work resists immediate resolution. As the eye moves across the surface, relationships between the marks continue to shift, creating a sense of evolving tension.
Untitled (04), Shine West places itself in opposition to image-led abstraction, focusing instead on the resistance, physicality, and duration of the marks. It invites the viewer to encounter it over time, allowing the marks to unfold and interact with one another, as the composition reveals itself through continuous engagement with its surface.
Created on smooth paper, the sheet was secured at each corner throughout the process. The composition extends close to the edges; mat or float framing is recommended to preserve the integrity of the work.
