Ascent is an original abstract painting by Timothy Gent, created in oil pastel and transparent watercolour on paper. Through layered colour, expressive mark-making and luminous washes, the work explores movement, balance and the shifting logic of memory.
Angular passages of oil pastel intersect with translucent veils of watercolour, creating a composition that feels both energetic and considered. Blues, violets, pinks and soft greens move across the surface, while areas of untouched paper introduce light and openness. The contrast between dense, tactile marks and delicate transparent passages gives the painting rhythm, depth and a sense of unfolding space.
The composition suggests ascent, drift and changing direction, with colour and line gathering around a subtle structural framework. This tension between spontaneity and control gives the work its vitality while preserving a calm visual harmony.
As with Timothy Gent’s wider abstract practice, the painting rewards sustained viewing. Changes in natural light reveal new relationships between colour, texture and surface, allowing the work to evolve throughout the day. Rich in gesture yet carefully resolved, Ascent offers a contemplative presence in both contemporary and traditional interiors.
Created using professional artist materials on archival paper, this is a unique, one-of-a-kind artwork, signed by the artist and supplied with a certificate of authenticity.
Executed on 300 gsm cold-pressed watercolour paper, the sheet was secured throughout the painting process to maintain a flat working surface. The composition extends close to the edges; mat or float framing is recommended to preserve the integrity of the work.
