From Observation to Abstraction
The seascapes are an important part of Timothy Gent’s wider practice. Working from the changing conditions of the British coast has led naturally towards a more abstract language of colour, structure, movement and mark-making.
The paintings are not intended simply as literal records of particular places. Instead, they explore what remains in the memory of a place – the changing light, the rhythm of waves, the movement of clouds and the atmosphere of the shoreline.
This relationship between observation, memory and abstraction continues in the abstract paintings, where coastal impressions are developed into more expressive compositions.
