Cool of West Beach condenses the shifting rhythm and energy of a coastal environment into a dynamic abstract field. Built through repeated, physically engaged applications of oil pastel, charcoal and ink, the composition balances movement with structural clarity, as marks accumulate and intersect without hierarchy, drawing the eye across the picture plane without settling too quickly.
Rather than represent a specific scene, the work evokes the sensory experience of place: breeze, light, distance and the subtle pull between calm and motion. Gesture becomes structure here, with directional marks, layered rhythms and variations in pressure working together to organise space without resorting to literal forms or motifs.
Colour functions both materially and atmospherically, creating contrast, resonance and quiet shifts across the surface. The interaction of tones and textures resists immediate resolution, rewarding extended viewing and a slower kind of attention.
Cool of West Beach asserts itself as an artwork of sustained presence, to be encountered over time rather than consumed at a glance.
Created on Arches 300 gsm paper, the sheet was secured at each corner throughout the process. The composition extends close to the edges, so mat or float framing is recommended to preserve the integrity of the work.
