Fulcrum – Original Abstract Oil Pastel & Watercolour Painting by Timothy Gent

Fulcrum is an original abstract painting by Timothy Gent, created using oil pastel and transparent watercolour on paper. Layered marks and translucent washes create a composition that balances expressive gesture with structural clarity, appearing both immediate and carefully resolved.

Centred on a point of equilibrium, the composition is formed through intersecting diagonals, shifting directional strokes and areas of untouched paper that allow light to remain active within the image. Vivid blues, violets, pinks and soft greens move across the surface with energy and clarity, while contrasts between dense marks and transparent washes create rhythm, depth and spatial tension.

Timothy Gent's abstract paintings are informed by memory and landscape rather than direct observation. Here, those associations are distilled into an image of movement, pressure and suspension, where line and colour pivot around a quiet structural core. The untouched white of the paper is integral to the composition, introducing luminosity, pause and breathing space.

Balancing energy with restraint, the painting reveals subtle shifts in texture, transparency and colour as light changes across the day. These qualities reward sustained viewing, allowing new relationships between colour, mark and space to emerge over time.

Technique & Framing

Executed on 300 gsm cold-pressed watercolour paper, the sheet was secured throughout the painting process to maintain a flat working surface. The composition extends close to the edges; mat or float framing is recommended to preserve the integrity of the work.
