Intervals is an original contemporary abstract work in watercolour and ink by UK artist Timothy Gent, conceived as a diptych and intended to be experienced as a single expansive composition. Measuring 75 × 110 cm overall, the work occupies a space between movement and stillness, drawing the eye through changing areas of intensity before allowing it to settle into quieter expanses. There is no single point at which the composition resolves; instead, the eye is continually encouraged to move, pause and return.
The two panels create a subtle sense of dialogue. They are connected without becoming identical, allowing each to retain its own presence while contributing to the atmosphere of the whole. The interval between them becomes more than a physical separation: it introduces a pause within the rhythm of the painting, creating moments of anticipation and release as the eye moves from one panel to the other.
There is an immediate energy to Intervals, but it is balanced by an underlying sense of restraint. Painted in watercolour and ink on two Daler-Rowney The Langton Prestige 300gsm (140lb) 100% cotton watercolour paper sheets, each measuring H 75 × W 55 cm. The papers were secured around their edges throughout the painting process, leaving small staple holes around the perimeter. When framed, approximately 1 cm of the outer edge of each sheet may be concealed.
The original paper forms an integral part of the composition, contributing to its luminosity and sense of space. As the two sheets were conceived and painted together as a single diptych, framing should preserve the intentional interval between them and the original proportions of the work. A bespoke framing or mounting solution is recommended.
