Thresholds – Original Abstract Watercolour Diptych by Timothy Gent

Thresholds is an original abstract watercolour diptych by UK artist Timothy Gent, created as two companion sheets of archival watercolour paper and conceived from the outset as a single work. Measuring 110 × 75 cm overall, the diptych brings together transparent washes of blue, violet, crimson and muted green with sweeping gestures, fine linear marks and expanses of untouched paper. The composition develops through the interaction of colour, transparency, movement and space rather than through the depiction of a recognisable subject.

Across the two panels, areas of concentrated colour give way to passages of remarkable openness. Transparent layers allow the subtly textured surface of the hot-pressed paper to remain present within the painting, while denser applications and more decisive marks introduce rhythm, direction and weight. The two sheets are closely related but not mirrored: each retains its own character while contributing to a larger, carefully balanced field of movement. The space between the panels becomes part of that relationship, allowing forms and gestures to approach, recede and resonate across the divide.

There is a deliberate tension between spontaneity and restraint throughout Thresholds. Fluid washes retain the immediacy of watercolour, while individual marks and areas of colour are placed with a strong awareness of the surrounding space. Rather than resolving into a particular landscape, figure or place, the painting remains open to interpretation. Its visual experience develops through changing relationships between colour, line, transparency and the white of the paper itself.

The scale of the work gives these relationships a physical presence that is difficult to experience in a smaller painting. Viewed at close range, subtle variations in pigment, water and brushwork become apparent; from further away, the two panels read as a single expansive composition. Changing natural light reveals different degrees of transparency and surface, allowing the painting to shift between moments of intensity and quietness.

Thresholds is a substantial and fully resolved original work from Timothy Gent's abstract watercolour practice. Created as a diptych rather than as two independent paintings, the two sheets are intended to be displayed together, where their differences and connections become an integral part of the work. It is a unique original artwork, signed, titled and dated by the artist and supplied with a signed Certificate of Authenticity.

Technique & Framing

Painted on two RWS 425gsm (200lb) 80/20 cotton-linen rag watercolour paper sheets, each measuring 55 × 75 cm, the papers were secured throughout the painting process to maintain a stable surface. Although classified as hot-pressed, the paper has a subtle natural texture that responds sensitively to transparent washes, flowing marks and denser passages of pigment. The composition extends close to the edges of both sheets, so float framing or a minimal window mount is recommended to preserve the integrity of the original paper and the visual relationship between the two panels.
