Artwork shown in an example frame (not to scale)
Torque Lock captures forces in arrest: diagonal vectors converge on a central spine, held in taut suspension. Bold black strokes anchor the composition, while vivid cyan, magenta, lime and violet lines trace thrust, rebound and controlled tension across the surface, giving the work dynamic energy without release.
Across the series, gesture yields structure. Marks lean, break and resume, forming vectors that rotate around the axis without a fixed focal point. Scraped passages catch the light at shifting angles, their glints activating the surface.
Colour and material interlock throughout the work. Dense passages advance while lighter areas expose earlier decisions, and the traces of smudge and scuff remain visible, testifying to a process of material negotiation and giving the surface continuity.
Within the Torque series, Torque Lock embodies restrained power: motion compressed into stillness, force held in equilibrium, and the image rewarding close and sustained viewing.
Executed on a full imperial Arches Aquarelle 300 gsm sheet, with the edges secured throughout. The composition extends to the paper edge, so a black mat or frame is recommended to enhance depth and tension.
Sennelier metallic and artist oil pastels, together with willow charcoal, build the layered surface. Scraped and textured passages reveal metallic highlights that shift under light.
