Abstract original art Torque Taut oil pastel by
Timothy Gent

Torque Taut stands as a rigorously constructed abstract in which diagonal vectors intersect and resist around dominant tracks, generating sustained tensile equilibrium.

The work uses oil pastel, willow charcoal, and Indian ink in accretive and subtractive layers. Surfaces are scraped, smudged, and reworked, registering the iterative process directly on the ground. Metallic silver, coppery red, and hybrid blue passages introduce fugitive reflectivity, glinting under raking light, while matte fields stabilise chromatic oppositions of pink, yellow, and violet.

Compositionally precise yet process-driven, the work avoids a singular focal point in favour of a circulating spatial logic. Forces shear, rebound, and tighten without resolution. Incidental marks and scuffed grounds testify to material negotiation. This measured restraint, set against the series’ more febrile gestures, positions Torque Taut as a fulcrum: structural clarity within controlled dynamism, rewarding sustained attention.

Technique & Framing

Full imperial Arches Aquarelle 300 gsm sheet, edges secured throughout. The composition extends to the paper edge; mat mounting is recommended. Sennelier metallic oil pastels (silver, red, blue mix), artist-grade oil pastels, willow charcoal, and Indian ink. Textured, scraped surfaces reveal metallic highlights under shifting light.
