Torque Taut is a rigorously constructed abstract in which diagonal forms intersect and tighten around dominant tracks, creating a sustained sense of tension, movement and equilibrium.
The work combines oil pastel, willow charcoal and Indian ink through successive layers of addition and removal. Surfaces are scraped, smudged and reworked, leaving the physical process of making visible in the finished work. Metallic silver, coppery red and hybrid blue passages catch and release the light, while matte fields of pink, yellow and violet provide a counterpoint to their reflective intensity.
The composition is precise but remains visibly process-driven. Rather than directing the eye towards a single focal point, the work creates a circulating movement across the surface. Forces appear to shear, rebound and tighten without fully resolving, while incidental marks and scuffed grounds retain evidence of the continual negotiation between structure and gesture.
Measured rather than static, Torque Taut balances structural clarity with controlled dynamism. The work rewards sustained attention, with shifting relationships between line, colour, texture and light revealing themselves progressively across the surface.
Painted on a full imperial sheet of Arches Aquarelle 300 gsm paper, with the edges secured throughout. The composition extends to the paper edge, so mat mounting is recommended.
The work combines Sennelier metallic oil pastels in silver, red and blue mix with artist-grade oil pastels, willow charcoal and Indian ink. Textured and scraped surfaces reveal metallic highlights that shift with changing light.
