Weight Between is an original abstract watercolour and ink painting by Timothy Gent, developing ideas explored in Weight of Light through transparent washes, sweeping gestures and concentrated passages of mark-making. The work explores how weight can emerge through the tension between movement and stillness, colour and space, fluidity and decisive marks.
The composition shifts between open paper and denser passages of colour and mark. Watercolour washes underpin ink strokes, introducing direction, weight and physical presence. In the upper left, a direct ink gesture sweeps across the surface; on the right, ink combines with Alizarin Crimson before dispersing into the surrounding watercolour, moving between concentration and dissolution.
The white of the paper is an active element of the composition, creating intervals between denser passages and allowing warm colour and gesture to move through the surface. Rather than resolving into a particular landscape or place, Weight Between draws on the sensation of landscape, atmosphere and memory without seeking to represent them directly. The spaces between forms become as important as the forms themselves.
At close range, variations in pigment, water and ink reveal softened edges, broken marks and changes in density. From further away, these details gather into a broader field of movement and counterbalance. Natural light reveals changing degrees of transparency, depth and surface across the paper.
Painted on RWS 425gsm (200lb) 80/20 cotton-linen rag watercolour paper, the sheet was secured throughout the painting process to maintain a stable, flat surface. As the composition extends close to the paper's edges, float framing or a minimal window mount is recommended to preserve the paper as an integral part of the work.
