Weight of Light is an original abstract watercolour and ink painting by Timothy Gent, developed through transparent washes, sweeping gestures and more concentrated passages of mark-making. Light is not treated as a depicted subject, but as something experienced through colour, transparency, movement and the changing presence of the paper itself.
The composition moves between areas of luminous openness and denser, more energetic passages, allowing watercolour to retain its fluidity while ink introduces a stronger sense of direction and weight. Beneath the colour, the white of the paper remains an active part of the work, creating pauses and spaces through which the layers of pigment can breathe.
The painting holds movement against stillness. Some marks appear to carry the momentum of their making, while quieter passages allow the eye to slow and settle. Rather than resolving into a particular landscape or place, the work remains open, inviting associations with reflected light, memory and the fleeting way an atmosphere can be sensed rather than clearly defined.
At close range, subtle variations in pigment, water and mark become visible; from further away, these elements gather into a broader field of light and movement. The work is intended to change gently with the conditions in which it is seen, with natural light revealing different degrees of transparency and depth across the surface.
Painted on RWS 425gsm (200lb) 80/20 cotton-linen rag watercolour paper, the sheet was secured throughout the painting process to maintain a stable, flat surface. As the composition extends close to the paper's edges, float framing or a minimal window mount is recommended to preserve the integrity of the artwork.
